My Aunt Betty

Created by Kara 3 years ago

I didn't manage to meet Aunt Betty in person until I was an adult, but throughout my childhood she was that distinctive handwriting in birthday and Christmas cards, X's and O's and lovely little gifts sent from far away England. My first visit to Ireland and England was with my dad (George) for a family funeral, but Betty and Teddy were there to welcome us and make me feel at home.

Jeff and I were delighted to visit Aunt Betty and Uncle Teddy on a wonderful holiday. All the family generously had us to stay with them and entertained us royally. We spent some of the best times in Betty's sitting room having a drink and a laugh, eating real takeaway fish and chips (not from the frozen foods section!). And we were delighted when Betty and Teddy visited all of us in Canada (although she didn't think much of our skunks-- one of the smellier features of The Wilds of Canada). I can see her on the chaise longue in my parents' back yard, lying in the sun with her sunglasses on, a glass in her hand, happily announcing "I'm on me hols."

Aunt Betty was a sparkling personality full of warmth and fun. She was clever and talented, worked hard, and succeeded. I admired her.

We will miss her very much. Our sincere sympathy to Teddy, Lesley, Neil, and all the family.

With love,

Kara and Jeff Guild
